Are You A Senior?

  • Over the Age of 60?
  • Who Makes Less Than $1,580/Month (OR $2,137/Household of 2)?
  • Who Needs Some Extra Food to Ensure a Healthy Diet?

The PA Senior Food Box Program works to improve the health of low-income seniors by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA Foods. In Pennsylvania, eligible participants include low-income individuals who are at least 60 years old and whose household income is at or below 130 percent of the U.S. poverty level.

The senior food boxes do not provide a complete diet, but rather are good sources of the nutrients typically lacking in the diets of older Americans. Among the types of foods included in the food boxes are: non-fat dry and shelf-stable fluid milk, juice, oats, ready-to-eat cereal, rice, pasta, dry beans, peanut butter, canned meat, poultry, or fish, and canned fruits and vegetables.

The Senior Food Box Program is supported throughĀ Feeding Pennsylvania and USDA’s Commodity Supplemental Food Program. The USDA purchases the food and makes it available to the Department of Agriculture, which works with local non-profit agencies to facilitate distribution of the monthly food boxes to eligible participants. We want to help our seniors in Washington County get the nutrition they need to lead a healthy lifestyle.

We work with food retailers, restaurants, farmers, and other donors to recover edible food that may be nearing its expiration date, is a surplus of, or would otherwise be discarded to get it to our community members in need. By redistributing this food to those in need, we can help minimize waste while addressing hunger in the community.

There are an estimated 1,429 food-insecure children in elementary schools in Washington County. Our Little Moochi program serves 63,000 Moochi Paks to 11 school districts, 9 of which are in Washington County. Not all families are eligible for traditional food pantry systems or school meal programs. It is estimated that 471 of these hungry elementary school children may not qualify for the programs they desperately need, which is why the Moochi Paks and our community outreach distributions to families and children are important to bridge the gap.

Help us reach our goal by donating today at https://foodhelpers.org/#donate

A Message from George J. Omiros, CFRE, CAE, President & Chief Executive Officer:

This week is National Volunteer Week and we would like to extend a huge thank you to all who have given their time to volunteering!

Your helped impacted the lives of thousands of individuals and families in Washington County through your commitment to address food insecurity. Your support of Food Helpersā€™ mission allows us to serve families and children by providing food and other items to support their health.

We deeply appreciate your willingness to donate your time, your talent, and your treasury to fuel our efforts to address our Mission.

We need your efforts now more than ever as donors across our nation have slowed down their giving. We look forward to your continued volunteer engagement with Food Helpers/dba Greater Washington County Food Bank.

With Deepest Gratitude for all that you do for Food Helpers,
George
